Basic Engineering Services
Basic Engineering Services (BES) typically refer to the fundamental and essential stages of engineering work in a project. These services lay the groundwork for the entire project and provide the necessary information and plans for subsequent phases. Basic Engineering Services can vary slightly in their scope depending on the industry, but they generally include the following:
Feasibility Studies:
Purpose: Evaluate the technical and economic feasibility of a project.
Activities: Preliminary analysis of project requirements, site assessments, cost estimates, and risk assessments.
Conceptual Design:
Purpose: Develop a high-level concept for the project.
Activities: Rough layouts, process flow diagrams, basic system design, and identification of major components and equipment.
Preliminary Engineering:
Purpose: Refine the conceptual design and gather more detailed information.
Activities: Detailed process design, equipment specifications, preliminary P&IDs (Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams), and overall project cost estimates.
Front-End Engineering Design (FEED):
Purpose: Develop a detailed engineering plan based on preliminary engineering.
Activities: Detailed engineering drawings, equipment sizing, specifications, materials selection, and more accurate cost estimates.
Site Surveys:
Purpose: Collect data on the physical characteristics of the project site.
Activities: Topographical surveys, geotechnical investigations, environmental impact assessments, and other site-specific studies.
Regulatory Compliance:
Purpose: Ensure that the project complies with relevant laws and regulations.
Activities: Identify and address regulatory requirements, permits, and approvals needed for the project.
Basic Process Engineering:
Purpose: Develop a detailed understanding of the processes involved in the project.
Activities: Process flow diagrams, heat and material balances, and detailed process descriptions.
